If you only own one pearl necklace in your lifetime, make it this one.

The Hardly Common Classic Pearl Necklace begins with 2–3 years of cultivation in the freshwater fields of Zhejiang Province, China — the region that produces roughly 70% of the world’s cultured freshwater pearls. From each annual harvest we draw only the AAAA tier — the top 1–2% — and bring them to our Ontario studio for a second selection pass against a stricter internal standard.

CRAFTSMANSHIP & MATERIALS
• 5.5–6mm AAAA freshwater pearls — round, mirror-like reflections (GIA “Excellent” luster)
• Hand-matched at our studio for shape, surface, color, and overtone
• Silver-plated brass adjustable slide clasp — fine-tune from 40cm to 45cm
• Hand-knotted on Japanese silk between each pearl for security and even drape

THE STUDIO PROCESS
Every strand we ship has passed through our Ontario studio: arrival inspection, hand-matching for visual uniformity, and hand-knotting that takes several days per strand. Pearls that don’t meet our internal threshold for shape or surface go back to our cultivator.

If you would like to understand how each factor is judged — shape, luster, surface, and matching — read our guide: How to Tell Real Freshwater Pearl Quality: The 5 Factors →

THE PRINCESS LENGTH
At 40cm (adjustable to 45cm), princess length sits just below the collarbone — the most classic, universally flattering pearl necklace length. Built to last for generations with proper care.

Determine the correct bracelet, necklace, or ring size using our comprehensive size guide. If you need assistance, our client advisors are available to help you find the perfect fit.

Five qualities separate a good freshwater pearl from a great one. These are the same criteria we grade on ourselves.

Luster — The defining quality. A top-grade pearl reflects light almost like a mirror, with crisp edges instead of a soft haze. "Aurora luster" (what the Luxe uses) is the highest grade — a deep, three-dimensional glow from thick, well-ordered nacre.

Surface — Smooth, unblemished nacre. Minor markings are natural in most pearls; top-grade strands have them minimized or hidden at drilling points.

Shape — A truly round pearl rolls across a flat surface without wobbling. Near-round, off-round, baroque, and drop are progressively less symmetrical — each beautiful, at different price points.

Size — Measured in millimeters across the pearl's widest point. Larger sizes are exponentially rarer: a 9mm round freshwater pearl represents 3–5 years of cultivation, and most harvests never produce them in meaningful quantity.

Match — In a strand, consistency matters as much as any single pearl. Uniform color, gradient, and luster. A hand-matched strand reads as one piece of jewellery, not a collection.

A note on grades: AAAA+ is the top of our grading scale — pearls that satisfy all five criteria at once. They are selected, not produced.

To maintain the lustre of your pearls, gently wipe them with a soft, damp cloth after each wear. Avoid contact with perfume, hairspray, and harsh chemicals. Store your pearls separately in a soft pouch to prevent scratching.

The Hardly Common Experience

Crafted With Intention

When you choose Hardly Common, you become part of a story that spans generations. Each pearl is hand-selected for its natural beauty, then entrusted to our master artisans who transform it into a piece meant to endure — and to be cherished — for a lifetime and beyond.

Every strand is hand-strung and individually knotted between each pearl using premium Japanese silk thread. This traditional technique protects against pearl-to-pearl abrasion and ensures that if a strand ever breaks, only one pearl is at risk. Drilling, knotting, clasp fitting, and final alignment are done entirely by hand — a single strand takes two to three days to complete.
