Pearl Size & Necklace Length Guide

Choosing the right pearl size and necklace length can feel overwhelming, but it does not need to be. This guide will help you find the perfect fit for your style and body type.

Pearl Sizes

Pearl size is measured in millimeters across the diameter. Even a small difference — just half a millimeter — can noticeably change the look and presence of a piece. Here is what to expect at each size:

5.0 – 5.5mm (Delicate) — A refined, understated look. These smaller pearls sit close to the skin and carry a quiet elegance. Ideal for everyday wear, layering, or a first pearl necklace. Popular for younger wearers or those who prefer minimalist jewelry.

6.0 – 6.5mm (Classic) — The most traditionally popular pearl size. Versatile enough for both daily wear and formal occasions. This is the size most people picture when they think of a pearl necklace — timeless and universally flattering.

7.0 – 7.5mm (Versatile) — A step up in presence without being bold. This size offers a noticeable richness and depth of luster. Excellent for professional settings, evening wear, and as a go-to piece that transitions seamlessly from day to night.

8.0 – 8.5mm (Statement) — A commanding size that draws attention. These pearls have significant visual weight and a luxurious feel. Best suited for special occasions, formal events, or anyone who wants their pearls to make an impression.

9.0 – 10.0mm+ (Luxurious) — Rare and exceptionally striking. Pearls of this size take significantly longer to cultivate and represent the pinnacle of freshwater pearl jewelry. A true collector's choice.

Necklace Lengths

The length of your necklace affects how it sits on your body and the overall look it creates. Here are the standard lengths and where they fall:

16 inches — Choker — Sits snugly around the base of the neck. A bold, fashion-forward look that pairs beautifully with open necklines, off-shoulder tops, and strapless dresses. Best for slender to average neck sizes.

18 inches — Princess — The most popular and versatile length. Falls just below the collarbone, complementing virtually any neckline and body type. This is our most recommended length for first-time buyers.

20 inches — Matinee (Short) — Rests at or just above the top of the bust line. Offers a slightly more relaxed look than the princess length. Works well with business attire and higher necklines.

24 inches — Matinee — Falls at the center of the bust. A graceful length that adds vertical dimension and works beautifully with sweaters, blazers, and layered outfits.

30+ inches — Opera & Rope — Long, dramatic strands that can be worn as a single strand or doubled for a layered look. A statement piece that transforms any outfit.

Bracelet Sizing

To find your bracelet size, wrap a flexible measuring tape around your wrist just above the wrist bone. Add approximately 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) for a comfortable fit. If you prefer a looser bracelet, add 3/4 to 1 inch instead.

Our standard bracelet length is 7 inches, which fits most average wrists comfortably. If you do not have a measuring tape, wrap a strip of paper around your wrist, mark where it meets, and measure the length with a ruler.

Choosing What Is Right for You

There is no single correct answer — the best pearl size and length depend on your personal style, the occasions you plan to wear them, and what feels right when you put them on. As a general guideline: if you tend toward understated elegance, start with 6.0–7.0mm pearls in an 18-inch princess length. If you prefer your jewelry to make more of a presence, consider 7.5–8.5mm pearls at a 16 or 20-inch length.
