The Art Behind Every Strand
At Hardly Common, we believe that exceptional pearl jewelry begins long before a clasp is fastened. It starts with a commitment to sourcing only the finest freshwater pearls — and the patience to assemble each piece entirely by hand.
Hand-Selected Pearls
Every pearl in our collection is individually chosen from harvests across premier freshwater pearl farms. Our selection process is exacting: we evaluate each pearl across five critical dimensions — luster, surface quality, shape, color, and nacre thickness. Only pearls that meet our AAAA and AAAA+ standards are considered. This means that for every pearl that enters our collection, many more are passed over.
We work exclusively with freshwater pearls, which are cultivated in the pristine lakes and rivers of China's pearl-producing regions. Unlike saltwater varieties that form around a bead nucleus, freshwater pearls are composed almost entirely of nacre — the luminous crystalline substance that gives pearls their signature glow. This solid-nacre composition produces exceptional durability and a distinctly warm, satiny luster.
Hand-Strung & Hand-Knotted
Each strand is assembled by hand using traditional pearl-knotting techniques refined over generations. A silk knot is placed between every individual pearl, serving two essential purposes: it prevents pearls from rubbing against one another (which can cause surface wear over time), and it ensures that if a strand were ever to break, only one pearl would be at risk of loss rather than an entire necklace scattering.
We use premium Japanese silk threading material for its superior strength and gentle drape. The result is a strand that moves with a fluid, natural grace — a subtle quality that distinguishes handcrafted pearl jewelry from machine-assembled alternatives.
Thoughtful Hardware
Each clasp and finding is selected for the piece — solid 14K gold and sterling silver on our Heirloom and Atelier Commission pieces, and hand-finished gold-plated brass on our Collection pieces. We disclose the exact metal on every product page so you know exactly what you are bringing home. Solid 14K gold and sterling silver clasps are available on every piece by request through our Atelier Commission.
Our signature butterfly clasp is selected not just for its reliability, but for its refined profile. It sits flat against the skin, blending seamlessly into the design rather than drawing attention away from the pearls themselves.
Quality at Every Step
Before any piece leaves our hands, it undergoes a final inspection where we verify pearl matching, knot consistency, clasp function, and overall presentation. We examine each strand under magnification and controlled lighting to ensure that the luster, surface, and color of every pearl meets our published specifications.
Designed in Ontario, Canada, each piece reflects a philosophy of quiet refinement — jewelry that speaks through its quality rather than its volume.
