Inside Hardly Common
Some things are made loud.
We make ours quietly.
A pearl, a knot, and a standard we won't bend on — even when no one is watching.
A network you'll never see.
Most pearl houses buy by the kilo, from the largest farm that will sell to them. We don't.
Our pearls come through a network we know personally — small workshops in Zhuji where the people grading each harvest are family and lifelong friends. Not partners we found at a trade show. Not names on a contract. People we can call on a Wednesday afternoon and ask, did this batch reach lustre?
They don't have a website. They don't take press. They've turned down larger buyers more times than we can count.
That privacy is the reason their work is what it is. Quiet hands, demanding eyes — the only credentials that matter in a freshwater farm. We won't name them, and we won't ask them to perform for a brand. What we can tell you is that almost no one outside that network gets a first look at what they grade. We do.
We reject more pearls than we sell.
"Top 1%" gets thrown around. We mean it literally. Out of every hundred freshwater pearls our network grades, ninety-nine are not allowed near a knot in our studio.
What disqualifies a pearl?
A pearl that any other brand would call premium, we call rejected. We don't apologise for this. It's the only reason we exist.
"If we wouldn't put it on someone we loved, it doesn't leave the studio."
Built, not assembled.
Once a strand reaches our Ontario studio, it doesn't get strung. It gets built.
Every pearl is hand-knotted on double-stranded silk — a knot between every pearl, by hand, one at a time. Why this matters: if a strand ever breaks, you lose one pearl, never the row. The deeper reason: a strand made this way will outlive you.
A skilled knotter finishes about three strands a day. We don't speed this up. There is no way to speed this up that we'd be willing to ship.
Each clasp is selected for the piece — sterling silver, 14k gold, or our hand-finished gold-plated brass. We disclose the exact metal on every product page. No cheap coils. No surprises. Every piece leaves the studio with a certificate of authenticity, a care guide, and a note from the hands that finished it.
Worn close. Kept forever.
We don't sell jewellery for the night out. We sell strands you reach for on a Tuesday morning without thinking — pieces that sit on your collarbone for thirty years and end up around your daughter's neck on the day she needs them.
Pearls are one of the few things in the world that get more beautiful the more they're worn. Body warmth softens the surface. Daily wear deepens the glow. A strand that's been worn for forty years has a luminosity a new strand cannot fake.
This is what we mean by built to last. Not survives. Improves.
You already understand most of what we do.
